Southern Spotted Cicada (species complex) Gelidea torrida (Erichson, 1842)

Previously referred to as Cicadetta torrida. Species number (TNS): 198, 200. Fore wing length: 19–26 mm. Distribution and seasonality: Coastal Victoria from Otway National Park east to near Orbost and throughout Tasmania at altitudes up to 500 m. Adults can be observed from November until April. Notable localities: Lakes Entrance (Simon lab), Phillip Island, Flinders Island, Bay of Fires, Bicheno. Habitat: Eucalypt forest and shrubby heathland. Species complex includes: Twin-spotted Creaker (TNS: 198): Throughout Tasmania and also near Lakes Entrance in Victoria (Simon lab). Tasman Ticker (TNS: 200): Throughout Tasmania and coastal Victoria from Cape Otway east to near Orbost. Calling song and behaviour: A soft, creaking “urr-chip” call (Twin-spotted Creaker) or a rapid ticking call (Tasman Ticker). Adults sit on the stems of small trees and shrubs. Similar species: Check genera Kobonga and Clinopsalta.
